Our Safety Plan
Our #1 Priority of All is Safety
The MiracleKids Triathlon has been approved and sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the governing body for the sport of triathlon in the United States, which insures our events. This sanctioning process is quite extensive and provides the MiracleKids with additional event insurance as well as valuable safety guidelines and training.
There is always an element of risk participating in all sporting events but the MiracleKids has achieved a wonderful safety record throughout our 5 years of racing. Our courses are designed by expert triathletes led by world champion triathlete, Tony Schiller, our race director. Tony and his crew of experienced triathletes and volunteers have analyzed every detail to make the races the safest of their kind anywhere.
But just in case, we have two outstanding teams of health care and public safety professionals right in the middle of all the action. In Minneapolis, that team is headed up by Children’s Hospitals of Minnesota, Hennepin County Water Patrol and the Minneapolis Park Board and Police. In Chanhassen, that team is headed up by Ridgeview Medical Center, the Carver County Sheriff’s Department, the City of Chanhassen, and the Chanhassen Fire Department among others.
The Swim: There are plenty of life guards on hand, so it’s perfectly safe even for kids who cannot swim. We have kids start one at a time in short intervals to give each the space to swim at their own pace and to make viewing of each child 100% complete.
The Bike: The entire bike courses are closed to traffic by police and monitored by teams of volunteers. Our rule is to have enough volunteers and Law Enforcement so that at no time on the course are kids out of site of a race official. With large and clear signage and plenty of corner marshals, kids always stay on course at the MiracleKids. All kids must wear an approved bicycle helmet and have it snapped the entire time their bike is on the course. No racers are allowed to wear head phones or use I-Pods while on the race course.
The Run: There will be water on the course and plenty of volunteers guiding kids along. More water and sport drinks will be at the finish too. All kids must wear sneakers on the run – no flip flops!
Heat Concerns: The best remedy for summer heat is to be in the best shape possible, so practice all three sports and stay as active as possible, even on hot days. Drink water – not pop – even on race morning. Slow your pace down the hotter it gets – it really helps. Wear light and comfortable sportswear. Find shade and chill out until you race. If during the race you ever feel dizzy or light headed, slow down, stop and ask for help. Volunteers are trained to assist any athlete who stops or raises their hand to ask for help. Just race smart and everything will be alright.
Lost Children: The crowds at MiracleKids are big, and occasionally a kid and parent cannot find each other. When you get to the race in the morning, parents and kids will be given a matching number which we will use to be able to page parents by this number. Upon arriving on race morning, it is wise to pick a spot for the whole family to regroup after the race.
Most Important: Come ready to relax, enjoy and have fun. It’s going to be a great day for everyone!
